A Conflict of Interest

From Wikipedia (April 21, 2010 – 4:14 a.m.) –

A conflict of interest (COI) occurs when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation for an act in the other.

Evolution is the change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms through successive generations.

A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time. Aristotle described two types of political revolution:

Jason's New Unicycle - Balance and Progress

These two postings are the story of me and my growth from angst to acuatlization and the son of a dear friend who is commencing the same journey. He is me at 20 or I was him at 20. At the age of 20 we were both "crippled" by our potential and ignoring our possibilities. I've made the transition from worrying about why I can't to a new excitment of discovering that more often than not - YES I CAN!

"Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag"

If you’re near my age you know the song – you can visualize the explosion of energy, electricity, and emotion that was James Brown. Research for this title took about 30 seconds on the Internet. From Songfacts I learned that, “A ‘bag’ is slang for a way of doing something or a kind of lifestyle. In this song, Brown is singing about how he's come up with something new.” This article is about a new “bag” – me and my “new bag” and Jason who is just starting to design his new “bag” – our new lives and lifestyles.

Pacifiers or Breast Feeding - Are you a manager or a leader?

I raised two boys or maybe, more correctly, they raised me. I was lucky – at the end of the process I have “two sons” that make me proud and I love dearly. I was unprepared to be a parent when I became one but through trial and error, the grace of God, and some blind luck I survived. As I reflect back on the experience – I also, in the process, got a “Ph.D.” in management and leadership. I now realize that parenting, like business, gives the organizational “parent” the opportunity to react to behavior or proactively influence the growth, development, and maturation of the child.

Carpe Manana!

Seize tomorrow – if you are reading this article as the leader of your organization continue to do so – this is your job and should be your passion. If you are being consumed by the moment – the urgent - Carpe Diem – seize today - you may be a great manager but your leadership role is being neglected or ignored. Leadership is about Vision – the future – tomorrow!

Outsourcing my Bragging!

Preface: As an amateur in many aspects of my life - I've learned it's often best to bring in a professional help when it is needed. As an entrepreneur and self-employed consultant I am dependent upon shameless self promotion. This posting allows me to shamelessly self promote while simultaneously outsourcing to a professional writer (and my favorite columnist even in advance of this fabulous column). I hope you enjoy!

Miracles are real - Believe!

I have two sons, Slade and Seth. Seth is my youngest (age 28). Slade is 30. Seth made parenting easy. Slade on the other hand caused us some angst during the process (I hope this public statement doesn't shock him).

About a month ago Seth called and asked, "Do you want the good news or the bad?" I answered, "The Bad." He laughed and said, "I have a tattoo." Seth isn't in the Navy so this revelation shocked me. After a moment he explained that he had, "Who dat?, a Fleur de Lis, and Superbowl XLIV Champions" tattooed on his upper arm.

A Primer for Tomorrow!

One man’s opinion (Mike Manes) -

Change is… so leadership must be.

Change is the transition from today through tomorrows.

Without change death occurs; with change growth continues.

Today, without change, can never become tomorrow.

In the comfort zone change has no Advocate; in the marketplace change enjoys
a mandate

Individuals “can” change; but the “will” is needed to make it happen.

The Wisdom of the ages -

“Different isn’t always better but better is always different.” Dale Dauten

“The first role of the leader is to define reality.” Max DePree

What's really important?

I’m back. I departed this keyboard for a few weeks merely because of business distractions and sometimes I just run out of words. As some of you know, in November of 2008 one of my dearest friends, George Gros, was dying waiting for a match for his bone marrow. If a match had been found and transplant completed George would probably be alive today. He died on December 20, 2008.

Back to the Future - This I Resolve!

As you ponder your Resolutions for the New Year consider these two quotes:

”The first role of the leader is to define reality.” Max DePree

“To thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” William Shakespeare
