The best way to predict the future is to create it.

Peter Drucker

"The Road to well" is the "Road Less Traveled"

For ten years I stood in front of classes at LSU and surveyed them to determine what was important in their lives. The survey form included twelve to fifteen words such as wealth, success, family, security, knowledge, etc. I asked them to prioritize these words in terms of their future. Every semester security and success ranked # 1 and # 2 - the order changed occasionally but these were always 1 and 2.

Do you Know or Know not?

Max DePree, a noted expert on leadership states, “The first role of the leader is to define reality.” This is good - no great - advice. You may have heard the joke that ends - “You can’t get there from here.” The truth is that you can’t get there from here if you don’t know where here is. This is the genius of Mr. DePree’s aforementioned statement - your current reality is the “here.”

Making Money and Having Fun - An Ideal or a Result?

I’ve been writing columns and articles (these were the Stone Age [pre-Internet] equivalent to Blogs) for thirty plus years. I’ve never before established a pre-requisite for reading any of these collections of words on paper. Today I’d like to suggest one - before reading further, please review my December 11, 2008 posting on this blog ( - One Word on New Year’s Resolutions.

One Word on New Year's Resolutions

If you are now or soon will be planning your New Year’s Resolutions by sitting quietly and reflecting on the past year - terrorism, a Wall Street meltdown, a global recession, a political shift of seismic proportions - hope, change, fear, concern, etc. and considering the future and what you must do to make your life and your world better let me offer one word - DON’T!

The Great Economic Collapse of 2008 - What Now?

One Friday evening, Boudreaux and Comeaux go to the Veteran’s Building in New Iberia for a Fais Do Do (dance). They drive to the back of the building, park under the back carport, and enter through the back door. About 3:00 a.m. - after hours of hard drinking, dancing, and partying, the band quits playing. Comeaux goes to the car but Boudreaux is not there. Comeaux goes back into the building and does not see him. He searches in the bathroom and under the tables - no Boudreaux.

The Great Economic Collapse of 2008 - What Happened?

Stormy defines me as “often wrong but never in doubt.” He’s probably right. What follows is my best and most confident attempt to explain “what happened” to cause our recent financial meltdown.

Our parents and grandparents took a country distressed by World War I and the Great Depression and built it into the greatest military and economic super power in the history of the world. Today we appear to be backing into another depression.

• In the post-depression world - people had “nothing” and appreciated everything. Today most have “everything” and appreciate nothing.

Decision Making in Corporate America

Nancy Newbee is the newest trainee for LOCO (Large Old Company), Inc. She was hired because she is bright, articulate, well educated and motivated. She is in her second week of training.

Her orders include: “We’ll teach you all you need to know. Sammy Supervisor will monitor your every action and coordinate your training. Don’t take a step without his clearance. When he’s busy just read through the procedures manual.”

Nancy is already frustrated by this training process but is committed to following the rules.

A friend, Barbara Carey (e-mail -, recommended that I buy this text and it’s her ideas that are this article. Her thoughts completed the circle that originated from earlier comments from another friend, Anne Bailey Berman (

The Challenge of Change

“There is no more delicate a matter to take in hand, nor more dangerous to conduct, nor more doubtful to success, than to step up as a leader in the introduction of change. For he who innovates will have for his enemies all those well off under the existing order of things, and only lukewarm supporters in those who might be better off under the new.” Niccolo Machiavelli

You can't handle the truth!

In the movie a Few Good Men Jessep and Kaffee had an exchange that included the aforementioned statement. In reality most of us can’t handle the truth either.

Truth is the focus of many great quotes, thoughts and thinkers, good intentions, and our belief system yet time and time again it is just a word on a page and not an action. Denial is the safety net of an addict. Without denial addiction overwhelms us (even addiction to the status quo) – remove denial and the healing process begins.
